The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest is a 2010 action-adventure video game developed by Headstrong Games. The game is an adaptation of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy; The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). Set fifteen years after the War of the Ring, the game features Samwise Gamgee telling his children of the adventures of Aragorn during the conflict; his stories form the majority of the game’s content.
In The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest, players assume the role of Aragorn to take on his greatest quests from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wielding a sword, shield, bow and spear, fans will battle enemies, lead armies and journey through a colorful and fresh rendition of Middle-earth. Players can even switch between spear and sword on horseback; taking down evil foes in an action-packed gameplay experience. Two-player co-op gameplay featuring Gandalf allows kids, families and friends to work together in the heart of the action.
The game is divided up into two different gameplay sections. The main game sees the player control Aragorn, as Samwise Gamgee tells his children stories of Aragorn’s adventures during the War of the Ring fifteen years previously. The other gameplay section is located in the Shire in the game’s present, with the player controlling Sam’s son, Frodo, as he helps his fellow Hobbits prepare a party for the arrival of Aragorn (now King Elessar of Gondor).
Gameplay in both areas is the same, and the game is structured in such a way that as Frodo learns skills in the Shire, these skills then become available to Aragorn in the main game. If a second player is present, they control Frodo’s sister Elanor in the Shire, and Gandalf in the main game. However, the players cannot switch characters – player one must always be Aragorn and Frodo, and player two must also be Gandalf and Elanor.
